PROJECT
Aura @ The Coal Exchange
Location: Cardiff Bay, South Wales
Project Type: Electrical Installation
Project Duration: 8 weeks
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The project involved the full electrical installation of a new bar and restaurant.
The client required a modern/industrial type style, energy-efficient system with robust power distribution, flexible lighting controls, and seamless integration of feature lighting to enhance the customer experience. A Lutron lighting control system was specified to allow for dynamic scene setting, dimming, and energy savings.
Scope of Works
The works included:
- Design, supply, and installation of the complete low-voltage electrical system.
- Installation of new circuitry.
- General power supplies to kitchen, bar, refrigeration, and POS (point-of-sale) equipment.
- Lighting design and installation, including feature lighting and emergency lighting.
- Integration of a Lutron QS lighting control system to provide scene setting and timed operation.
- Containment, wiring, and cable management solutions.
- Testing, certification, and handover to the client’s management team.
Lighting Installation
Lighting was a critical aspect of the project, both functionally and aesthetically.
- Ambient Lighting: Energy-efficient LED downlights installed across dining and bar areas for uniform coverage.
- Feature Lighting: Decorative pendants, wall lighting fixtures, and LED strip lighting installed to highlight architectural features and create a warm/industrial atmosphere.
- Emergency Lighting: Maintained/non-maintained luminaires installed in compliance with BS 5266-1 to ensure safety in evacuation scenarios.
- Control Integration: Each lighting zone was connected to the Lutron system to enable programmable scenes (e.g., daytime dining, evening service, private functions).
Power Installation
- Distribution: New circuitry was installed with RCBO protection in compliance with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations).
- General Power: 13A twin sockets and floor boxes provided for staff and customer use.
- Bar Power: Dedicated supplies installed for commercial kitchen equipment, refrigeration, pumps, and drinks coolers.
- Specialist Supplies: Isolated circuits installed for sound systems, AV equipment, and IT infrastructure to prevent interference and ensure stable performance.
Lutron Lighting Control System
The Lutron QS system was chosen for its flexibility, ease of use, and ability to integrate with the overall design concept.
Key features delivered:
- Scene Control: Pre-programmed lighting scenes accessible via wall-mounted keypads and mobile app.
- Dimming Control: Smooth dimming for all LED lighting circuits.
- Timeclock Scheduling: Automated lighting changes to suit trading hours and reduce energy usage.
- Energy Efficiency: Reduced consumption through intelligent dimming and zoning.
- User Experience: Staff can quickly change between “Lunch,” “Dinner,” “Bar,” and “Cleaning” modes with a single button press.
Challenges & Solutions
- Challenge: Maintaining a balance between functional task lighting and atmospheric mood lighting.
Solution: Layered lighting design with adjustable Lutron scenes allowed for flexible adaptation throughout the day. - Challenge: Coordinating electrical containment with other services (plumbing, HVAC, kitchen extraction).
Solution: Early-stage design coordination and weekly site meetings to avoid clashes. - Challenge: Integrating decorative lighting sourced by the interior designer.
Solution: Factory testing and pre-installation mock-ups ensured compatibility with Lutron dimming modules.
Outcome
The project was successfully delivered on time and within budget. The client now benefits from:
- A safe, compliant electrical installation designed for long-term reliability.
- A flexible, intuitive Lutron lighting system that enhances ambience and reduces energy costs.
- Seamless integration of power and lighting infrastructure, supporting both customer comfort and operational efficiency.
