PROJECT OVERVIEW
This project involved the full electrical installation of a new client Substation Building at Crystal Rig IV Wind Farm, Dunbar, Scotland.
The works required the integration of small power, lighting, heating, and environmental control equipment, alongside the installation of life safety and security systems. The installation was delivered to meet the demanding standards of the renewables sector while ensuring reliability, compliance, and ease of maintenance.
Scope of Works
The project included the design, supply, installation, and commissioning of the following:
Small Power:
- General socket outlets for operational use.
- Dedicated circuits for control and monitoring equipment.
Lighting Installation:
- High-efficiency LED luminaires for general illumination.
- Emergency lighting in compliance with BS 5266-1.
- External security lighting for safe access.
Heating & Environmental Controls:
- Electric panel heaters for temperature regulation.
- Dehumidifier installation to maintain optimal environmental conditions and protect electrical equipment.
Security Systems:
- Texecom Intruder Alarm System installed to provide perimeter protection, with internal PIR detection and remote signalling capability via the clients SCADA system.
Fire Safety Systems:
- Fike TwinFlex Pro fire alarm system installed to protect the building and critical equipment.
- Two-wire technology allowed integration of detection devices and sounders on the same circuit, reducing cabling requirements.
- Smoke and heat detectors, call points, and sounders installed in compliance with BS 5839-1.
Installation Approach
- Containment & Cabling: All wiring installed in steel conduit and trunking systems, providing durability and protection in a substation environment.
- Power & Distribution: Sub-circuits fed from a dedicated distribution board, with RCBO protection in accordance with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations).
- System Integration: All systems tested for compatibility, and operational handover provided to the client’s facilities management team.
- Documentation: As-fitted drawings, O&M manuals, and certification issued at project completion.
Challenges & Solutions
- Challenge: Delivering a robust electrical installation in a remote, high-exposure location.
Solution: All equipment specified to industrial standards, with IP-rated fittings suitable for the environment. - Challenge: Coordinating multiple building services systems in a compact substation building.
Solution: Careful design coordination and containment layout to optimise space without compromising maintenance access. - Challenge: Ensuring compliance with multiple standards (BS 7671, BS 5266, BS 5839).
Solution: Detailed design reviews and staged inspections throughout the installation.

The project was completed successfully, providing the client with a safe, reliable, and compliant electrical installation. The combination of robust building services, environmental control, and integrated life safety and security systems ensures the substation operates efficiently and is fully protected.
